What is going on with kWh billing and public EV charging prices?

For Marc Miron, a recent experience with public EV charging left him dismayed as he observed a significant increase in the cost of refueling his electric vehicle (EV). As a long-time plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) owner who recently transitioned to a fully electric Ford F-150 Lightning, Miron expected cost savings associated with EV ownership. However, he was taken aback by what he perceived as a "bait-and-switch" tactic by the industry regarding charging prices.

Traditionally, EV charging stations often billed users based on the time spent charging, which provided a sense of predictability and control over costs. However, a shift towards kilowatt-hour (kWh)-based billing has altered this dynamic for some EV drivers like Miron. With kWh-based billing, the cost of charging can vary widely depending on factors such as electricity rates and charging speed, leading to perceived ballooning costs overnight.

Miron's experience highlights a potential challenge for EV drivers transitioning from plug-in hybrids to fully electric vehicles. While EV ownership promises environmental benefits and reduced fuel costs, the switch to kWh-based billing introduces a level of unpredictability and frustration for some drivers. As the industry continues to evolve and charging infrastructure expands, addressing concerns around billing transparency and cost consistency will be crucial in maintaining consumer confidence and promoting widespread EV adoption.
