Want an EV? In Ontario, more than 40% looking at going electric, says poll

A recent survey conducted from January 12 to 15, 2024, sheds light on the attitudes of Ontario drivers toward electric vehicles (EVs). The survey, which polled 816 drivers who utilized LowestRates.ca's auto quoter, reveals that 41% of Ontario drivers are currently not considering an EV for their next vehicle purchase. Among those not considering EVs, 55% express concerns regarding the purchase cost, indicating that affordability remains a significant barrier to EV adoption.

Additionally, the survey found that 49% of respondents are worried about the availability of charging stations, while 40% express concerns about the feasibility of installing a charger at home. These factors underscore the importance of infrastructure development and accessibility to charging facilities in promoting widespread EV adoption. Despite the growing interest in EVs, the study highlights that 88% of Ontario drivers currently drive gas-powered vehicles. However, insurance broker Steven Harris of LowestRates.ca suggests that as EVs become more prevalent, insurance rates may become more competitive due to increased availability of repair parts and a subsequent reduction in maintenance and repair costs associated with EVs.

The survey findings provide valuable insights into the challenges and considerations influencing Ontario drivers' decisions regarding EV adoption. Addressing concerns related to purchase costs, charging infrastructure, and home charging installations will be crucial in encouraging more widespread uptake of electric vehicles in the province.
