As gas prices remain high in Canada, interest in electric vehicles (EVs) is surging, with about two in three Canadians considering purchasing one for their next vehicle, according to a recent AutoTrader survey. Baris Akyurek, AutoTrader's marketing intelligence director, notes that interest in EVs has been growing steadily, particularly amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing gas prices. Nationally, EV searches rose by 89% year-over-year, and dealership inquiries about EVs increased by 567%. Despite this interest, only 5.6% of vehicle sales in Canada were EVs in 2021, up from 3.2% in 2020. Akyurek anticipates further growth in EV sales but acknowledges factors causing purchasing delays, including supply chain disruptions and heightened demand for electric vehicles. Despite these challenges, the trend suggests a significant shift towards EV adoption in Canada.
