Wait times for some EVs still long in Canada. Why it’s the opposite in the U.S.

David Sandelands, a resident of British Columbia (B.C.), recently received his electric Hyundai IONIQ 5 after a year and a half of waiting. He expressed satisfaction with its performance during a road trip. However, industry analysts note that while certain EV brands like Tesla and Polestar have minimal wait times, others require patience. Georgy Iny, director of the Automobile Protection Association, highlights that in provinces with high demand like Eastern Canada and B.C., wait times for EVs can range from six months to a year, or even a year and a half. He specifically mentions difficulties in obtaining Hyundai and Kia EVs, as well as long delays for Ford Mustangs and pickups.

Toyota's plug-in hybrid models are particularly challenging to acquire due to the brand's reputation for fuel efficiency. Zack Spencer from the Motormouth YouTube channel explains that Toyota's popularity in this regard contributes to the prolonged wait times for their EVs.

Despite these challenges, B.C. benefits from its Zero-Emission Vehicles Act, which mandates the supply of electric vehicles to the market or penalties for car companies. This legislation results in more EVs being shipped to B.C. and Quebec than to other provinces. Overall, while certain EV models may have extensive wait times, B.C.'s regulatory environment promotes the availability of electric vehicles in the market, offering consumers more options in their transition to sustainable transportation.
