The federal government wants Canadians to switch to electric vehicles. Are they interested?

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Canada have been consistently setting records, indicating a strong and growing demand, according to advocates. Louise Lévesque, the director of policy at Electric Mobility Canada, highlighted the increasing interest in EVs. Recently, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault unveiled the federal government's electric vehicle sales mandate regulations, aiming for 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035. Guilbeault noted a rapid shift toward zero-emission vehicles in the Canadian marketplace. However, some observers, including Niel Hiscox, president of Clarify Group Inc., a Canadian-based automotive research firm, argue that the market and demand for EVs are more complex. Data suggests that most Canadians may not be particularly enthusiastic about buying EVs, and achieving the 2035 targets might be challenging with the current trajectory. This nuanced perspective raises questions about the feasibility of reaching the set goals and emphasizes the need for further strategies to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in Canada.
