The environmental costs of EV batteries that politicians don't tend to talk about

The surge in electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing investments and the anticipation of a greener future also bring environmental challenges, as highlighted in Bloomberg News' New Energy Finance report. The report envisions a staggering 730 million EVs on the road by 2040, emphasizing the rapid growth of the EV market. In Canada, the transition to EVs is seen as a potential economic boon, with projections of 250,000 jobs and a $48 billion annual addition to the economy through a domestic supply chain.

However, concerns arise about the environmental impact as governments invest billions in EV battery manufacturing plants in southwestern Ontario. The dilemma revolves around the proper disposal or recycling of millions of EV batteries when they reach the end of their life cycle. While the shift to EVs promises economic benefits and a greener transportation landscape, addressing the environmental implications of mass EV adoption, particularly regarding battery waste, becomes a critical aspect of sustainable development.
