Tesla has officially updated the Model Y Long Range in Canada to show it as an import from China. This change means that the Model Y Long Range produced at Tesla's Giga Shanghai facility will now be sold in Canada. Importantly, it will be priced the same as the US-built Model Y crossovers previously sold in Canada.
The China-made Model Y Long Range, however, offers slightly less range compared to the US-made version, with an estimated driving range of 497 kilometers (km) compared to the US version's 531 km. Despite the reduced range, the price remains the same at $69,990 CAD.
This move allows Tesla to free up more US-made Model Y SUVs for sale in the United States, potentially allowing more customers to take advantage of the new US federal EV tax credit. By importing Model Y vehicles from China to Canada, Tesla can maintain its inventory in Canada without negatively impacting tax incentives in the country.
Tesla has already shipped over 10,000 EVs from China to Canada in the second quarter of 2023, indicating that this strategy is working well for the company. Additionally, Tesla is offering a cheaper Model Y RWD in Canada, starting at $59,990 CAD, with potential incentives of up to $12,000 CAD. This version of the Model Y also comes from Tesla's Giga Shanghai factory in China.
