Tesla emerged as a frontrunner in Canada's electric vehicle (EV) market, setting a new standard under the federal Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program. Despite the Model Y becoming eligible for incentives midway through the year, it spearheaded Tesla's impressive volume of deliveries in 2023.
The iZEV initiative provides rebates of up to $5,000 for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Tesla's dominance was evident as it recorded nearly as many qualifying deliveries as the combined total of its three closest competitors.
Data from Transport Canada revealed that Tesla delivered 43,654 vehicles eligible for the rebate program in 2023, a substantial increase from 2022 when only the Model 3 qualified for incentives, accounting for 10,944 rebate claims.
Tesla's significant lead over other manufacturers was evident, with Hyundai, Toyota, and Chevrolet's combined sales of 44,751, inclusive of PHEVs, almost matching Tesla's total. This underscores Tesla's strong position in the Canadian EV market and its ability to leverage government incentives effectively.
