Switch to EVs under Canada's new timeline is doable for N.W.T., say experts

After 2035, Canadians will no longer be able to purchase new gas or diesel-powered passenger vehicles, according to a federal plan announced by Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault. The regulation aims to phase out combustion engine vehicles and encourage the availability of battery-powered vehicles in Canada. In the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.), experts view the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs as both feasible and desirable, citing the success of EV technology in the northern climate. Mark Heyck, executive director of the Arctic Energy Alliance, notes the convenience of home charging and existing chargers in parking lots, given the relatively short daily travel distances in many northern communities. However, challenges lie in the implementation of fast-charging technology along major transportation routes. To address this, a network of high-speed EV chargers connecting N.W.T. residents from Yellowknife to Alberta is already in progress, fully funded, and expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The initiative reflects efforts to overcome challenges and support the adoption of electric mobility in northern regions.
