Supply issues hampering plan to make Hamilton’s vehicle fleet green

Hamilton, Ontario, is facing challenges in its efforts to transition its service vehicle fleet to electric due to a shortage of supply. Despite approving a strategy in May 2021 with a target to add 89 electric vehicles (EVs) by the end of 2024, the city has encountered difficulties in procuring these vehicles. Tom Kagianis, the fleet manager, revealed that even after extending bid solicitations for electric sport utility vehicles and vans twice, the city received no additional bids. The primary hurdle is the scarcity of available vehicles for lease or purchase from dealers. In response to the supply constraint, the city is considering alternatives, including hybrid vehicles and exploring various leasing options. However, Kagianis highlighted that the challenge is not unique to municipal fleets, extending to leasing companies as well, indicating a broader issue in the supply market for electric vehicles. This underscores the importance of addressing supply chain constraints to facilitate the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in municipal fleets and beyond.
