The federal government emphasizes the importance of expanding the electric vehicle (EV) charging network to achieve climate goals, but CBC's Marketplace investigation reveals significant disparities in pricing and reliability across public charging stations in Canada.
Marketplace conducted tests on pricing and reliability at several popular charging providers, including Ivy, Flo, ChargePoint, and Petro-Canada stations in Ontario. Through an equivalent comparison based on kilowatt-per-hour rates, Marketplace observed a notable discrepancy in costs for a 20-minute charge on a Volvo Polestar 2, with prices varying significantly between stations. While one station charged $10.09, another charged only $5.20 for the same service.
Additionally, in a separate reliability test, Marketplace assessed the performance of three different locations from each of the four charging companies using a Nissan Leaf.
