Prospects dim for BASF cathode active materials plant in Bécancour

Electric Autonomy has uncovered that German chemical giant BASF appears to have shelved its ambitions to build a sizable cathode active materials (CAM) factory in Quebec, just under two years after the firm first revealed its plans. An email from a business representative stated, "At this time, BASF is continuing to evaluate the best location for a cathode active materials and battery recycling hub in North America." "BASF is unable to provide any additional information due to business confidentiality." That declaration is a far cry from the March 2022 bullishness of the corporation. Then, BASF disclosed that it had purchased a property in the Bécancour Industrial Park, which is located between Quebec City and Montreal on the St. Lawrence River. The location was deemed by the business to be "an ideal location" for a battery and CAM recycling factory in North America. Since then, Bécancour has secured a number of other significant mineral processing contracts, including Ultium CAM (GM and Posco) and EcoPro CAM Canada (Ford, EcoPro BM, SK ON). Northvolt, a Swedish battery manufacturer, is currently constructing a $7 billion battery facility in Montreal.
