Ottawa set to outline plan to phase in electric-vehicle sales mandate

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault is set to reveal his plan today for phasing out the sale of gas-powered vehicles in Canada. The electric-vehicle sales mandate regulations, to be published later this week, will provide a framework for this transition. Currently, electric vehicles constitute 10% of new vehicle registrations in Canada. The regulations will impose sales requirements on automakers, allowing those falling short to compensate by purchasing credits from manufacturers exceeding their targets or by investing in charging infrastructure. This approach aims to create flexibility in meeting the mandates and encourages collaboration within the automotive industry. The announcement marks a significant step toward Canada's commitment to promoting sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions. The report by The Canadian Press, dated December 19, 2023, anticipates the forthcoming details of Guilbeault's plan, signaling a decisive move towards a future dominated by electric vehicles in the Canadian automotive market.
