Ontario invests $91M to add EV charging stations in smaller communities

The Ontario government is committing $91 million to the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in small and medium-sized communities. Prabmeet Sarkaria, the Minister of Transportation, announced the initiative in Port Hope, revealing that applications for the EV ChargeON program are now open. The program aims to install charging stations in communities with populations below 170,000 and in Indigenous communities. Charging stations will be strategically placed on government-owned land, including highway rest areas, carpool parking lots, and tourist destinations such as parks.

Sarkaria emphasized that the initiative is aligned with the government's goal to become a global leader in the electric vehicle industry and enhance travel options for commuters. By bolstering the EV infrastructure on public properties, including key travel locations, the EV ChargeON program seeks to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, contributing to a sustainable future for Ontario. The $91 million investment reflects the province's commitment to supporting the growth and accessibility of electric vehicles across various communities.
