Ontario funding nearly 100 Indigenous Energy Support Programs across dozens of communities

The Ontario government has allocated an additional $5 million to its Indigenous Energy Support Programs, bringing the total investment for the year to $15 million. These funds will support 93 projects in 58 Indigenous communities across Ontario. Administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), these programs aim to promote Indigenous leadership in the electricity sector and improve the reliability, affordability, and sustainability of the province's grid. The funding will also help reduce electricity costs in Indigenous communities. Todd Smith, Ontario's Minister of Energy, emphasized the government's commitment to providing reliable, affordable, and clean electricity to all communities, including Indigenous ones. This year's investment follows a previous allocation of $9.8 million for 83 projects in 53 Indigenous communities in 2022. Since 2009, the IESO has allocated a total of $71 million to 177 Indigenous communities and organizations through the Energy Support Programs.
