Ontario Expands Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

The Ontario government has completed the installation of electric vehicle (EV) fast chargers at all 20 renovated ONroute stations along the province's major highways, the 400 and 401, to enhance convenience for EV owners. Announced as part of a historic EV charger rollout in December 2021, the charging stations are a collaboration involving the Ontario government, Ivy Charging Network, ONroute, Canadian Tire, and Natural Resources Canada. Each ONroute station is equipped with at least two EV chargers, with busier areas having more, available to all drivers on a pay-per-use basis.

The initiative aims to support Ontario's growing EV manufacturing industry and accommodate the increasing adoption of electric vehicles. The chargers utilize a pay-per-use model, welcoming all vehicle types, and will contribute to the electrification of the transportation sector in the province. Additionally, the Ontario government launched an Ultra-Low Overnight electricity price plan, providing a third pricing option for electricity customers to encourage EV adoption and reduce emissions. These efforts align with the government's broader plan, "Driving Prosperity: The Future of Ontario’s Automotive Sector," to establish a domestic EV battery ecosystem and position Ontario as a hub for automotive innovation.
