Not opening books on Windsor NextStar EV plant is 'injustice' to Canada's skilled trades, House committee told

In a two-hour emergency committee meeting on Parliament Hill, Conservative MP Chris Lewis expressed concerns that Canadians feel jobs are being "stolen" due to NextStar's plan to hire 1,600 technicians, including 900 temporary staff from South Korea, for their electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Windsor, Ont. The company argues that these are specialized roles requiring specific expertise possessed by the South Korean workers, and Liberals suggest that the foreign-trained workforce will pave the way for 2,500 local jobs. Labour unions, the public, and some government officials oppose the move. The committee, addressing motions related to document release about the deal, faces pressure from the Conservatives to reveal contract details, emphasizing the $15 billion in federal and provincial subsidies. Lewis argues that transparency is crucial for skilled trades jobs, while Toronto-area Liberal MP Charles Sousa fears jeopardizing the NextStar deal and future investments by making contracts public. The meeting, disrupted by time constraints, resumed later, leaving unanswered questions about the allocation of tax dollars for job creation and the potential impact on foreign direct investment.
