Northvolt, the Swedish electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer, reported sabotage at its future battery plant site near Montreal, where nails were driven into trees intended for removal. The 170-hectare site, spanning McMasterville and Saint-Basile-le-Grand, experienced the act of sabotage, with about 100 trees affected. An anonymous group claimed responsibility, expressing opposition to the megaproject, alleging it would harm woods and wetlands while perpetuating car culture. The group aimed to hinder logging by inserting steel bars and nails into tree trunks to damage machinery.
Northvolt emphasized the safety risks posed to workers and the surrounding communities due to such sabotage. The company's $7-billion electric battery plant project, touted as the largest private investment in Quebec's history, was announced last year. Federal Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne condemned the sabotage, asserting the right to express objections in a free society but emphasizing the need for alternative means. Despite the act of sabotage, Champagne highlighted Northvolt's environmentally conscious approach and the generational opportunity presented by the EV battery plant in Quebec.
