Northvolt reaches deal with Quebec and Ottawa to build a $7-billion battery cell factory

Northvolt has officially announced its entry into Canada's electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing sector with plans for a $7 billion, 60 GWh-capacity facility spanning 170 hectares in McMasterville and Saint-Basile-le-Grand, Quebec. This project is expected to create approximately 3,000 jobs in the area. During a press conference, the Swedish battery manufacturer, Northvolt, revealed details about "Northvolt Six," which will be constructed just outside Montreal. The choice of location was influenced by factors such as access to renewable power and raw materials, making it an ideal base for Northvolt's first gigafactory outside of Europe. Paolo Cerruti, Co-Founder of Northvolt, will lead the project as CEO of Northvolt North America, with the company also establishing a head office in Montreal.

The financing for Northvolt Six, with its multi-billion-dollar price tag, involved significant public investment from various levels of government. François Legault, Premier of Quebec, described it as the largest private investment in Quebec's recent history, highlighting the project's importance in positioning Quebec as a global leader in the green economy. This announcement underscores the growing significance of Quebec in the EV battery manufacturing landscape and represents a significant step towards advancing Canada's position in the global EV market. With Northvolt's entry, Quebec is poised to further solidify its reputation as a hub for sustainable technology and green innovation.
