Northern Ontario sees more electric vehicle registrations in 2023

In 2023, Sudbury saw a notable surge in electric vehicle (EV) registrations, outpacing the growth rate observed across Ontario. Data from the Electric Vehicle Society of Greater Sudbury, sourced from Ontario's records, revealed that by December 2023, the city had 1,088 registered EVs, marking a 49% increase from the previous year. This growth rate slightly surpassed the province-wide increase of 45%, as reported by the EV Society. Devin Arthur, president of the Greater Sudbury chapter of the EV Society, noted the trend of exponential growth in EV registrations, a pattern anticipated by industry analysts.

Arthur attributed Sudbury's robust EV adoption to its involvement in battery-electric vehicle production, facilitated by the region's abundant mining of minerals crucial for battery manufacturing. Additionally, the mining industry's transition to electric equipment has exposed many individuals to the capabilities of EVs, potentially influencing their purchasing decisions. Beyond Sudbury, other northern Ontario cities also witnessed significant growth in EV registrations from 2022 to 2023. In North Bay's P1 postal codes, EV registrations increased from 154 to 220, reflecting a 43% rise. Similarly, Timmins' P4 postal codes experienced a 47% increase, with registered EVs growing from 49 to 72. The most substantial growth was observed in Sault Ste. Marie's P6 postal codes, where EV registrations nearly doubled from 118 in 2022 to 235 in 2023.

While the data highlights the accelerated adoption of EVs in northern Ontario, it does not provide a comparison to the growth rates of combustion-engine vehicles. Nonetheless, the trend signifies a promising shift towards sustainable transportation practices in these communities, likely driven by both environmental awareness and technological advancements in the automotive industry.
