In 2023, Sudbury witnessed a notable surge in electric vehicle (EV) registrations, surpassing the Ontario average growth rate. According to data from the Electric Vehicle Society of Greater Sudbury, there were 1,088 registered EVs in Sudbury by December 2023, marking a 49% increase from the previous year. This growth rate slightly outpaced the province-wide increase of 45%, as reported by the EV Society. Devin Arthur, president of the Greater Sudbury chapter, attributes this growth to the city's involvement in battery-electric vehicle production and the local mining industry's adoption of electric equipment, allowing individuals to experience EV capabilities firsthand. Northern Ontario cities also saw significant growth in EV registrations, with North Bay, Timmins, and Sault Ste. Marie all experiencing notable increases in plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicle registrations from 2022 to 2023. The trend reflects a broader shift towards EV adoption in the region, with potential implications for the automotive industry and environmental sustainability efforts.
