Final electric-vehicle mandate to come Tuesday, sales must double by 2026

Canadian auto companies achieved a record in electric vehicle (EV) sales this year, with 90,163 zero-emission vehicles sold in the first nine months, constituting 7.7% of total vehicle registrations, a significant increase from 5% in 2021 and 3.3% in 2020. However, to comply with Canada's forthcoming national EV mandate, they must nearly double this figure within three years. Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault is set to unveil the final rules under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, marking the country's first nationally-regulated EV mandate. The mandate targets a minimum percentage of EVs in the vehicles imported or offered for sale by manufacturers, not dealerships. Despite being a record, the current sales volume is only half of what's required to meet the initial 2026 target. Manufacturers can earn credits for exceeding targets, which can be stored for future use or sold to those falling short. The draft regulations proposed assigning one credit to each fully electric vehicle and variable credits to plug-in hybrids based on their range. The mandate aims to bolster Canada's transition to sustainable transportation and reduce emissions.
