How one Toronto condo got an EV charging retrofit job done — and done right

SWTCH Energy shares a success story of installing EV charging infrastructure in a multi-unit residential building (MURB), offering valuable insights for similar endeavors. In a midtown Toronto condo on Merton Street, 57 unit owners collaborated to install EV charging stations in their parking spots, despite only three of them owning electric vehicles. Partnering with SWTCH and Simply EV Charging Solutions, the condo board and property manager facilitated this installation, resulting in over 20% of units equipped with EV charging capabilities, with room for expansion. Melissa Minor, overseeing the project, lauds the seamless collaboration with SWTCH and Simply, streamlining the process for the property management.

The initiative underscores the growing demand for EV charging infrastructure amid surging electric vehicle sales in North America. With increasing government incentives and EV-ready bylaws, property managers and boards have opportunities to partner with industry experts, leveraging collective resources to future-proof their investments. The Merton Street condo exemplifies successful collective action driven by factors like collective buying power, real estate values, environmental concerns, and reducing gas dependence.

Beginning in 2018, the condo board proactively explored EV infrastructure, driven by resident inquiries and regulatory requirements. They sought to avoid piecemeal solutions and opted for a comprehensive approach to accommodate potential demand. Despite initial financial concerns, strategic planning, leveraging collective buying power, grant opportunities, and technical expertise made the project feasible, highlighting the importance of collaboration and proactive decision-making in implementing EV charging infrastructure in MURBs.
