Hot ideas emerging from Western Canada’s growing battery research cluster

In Electric Autonomy's "Behind the Battery" series, attention is drawn to the Western Canada Battery Consortium and Innovation Hub, situated at the University of Calgary, which leverages Alberta's frigid winter conditions for research and development. Despite the inviting appearance of the University campus on sunny days, the extreme cold and inclement weather often keep students indoors. The Consortium, led by Professor Venkataraman Thangadurai, operates from Science B and serves as an interdepartmental initiative aimed at establishing and expanding the battery industry in Alberta. The primary objective of the Western Canada Battery Consortium and Battery Innovation Hub is to specialize in cold weather battery chemistry on a global scale. This initiative positions itself as a research and development hub focused on addressing the challenges of extreme weather conditions, particularly in Alberta's harsh winter climate, with the ultimate goal of advancing battery technology suitable for cold environments worldwide.
