Honda is reportedly exploring the possibility of constructing an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Canada, as per Japanese financial publication Nikkei. The potential locations under consideration include one in Ontario, situated adjacent to an existing automobile factory. A decision from Honda is expected by the end of the year, with the plant potentially commencing operations as early as 2028. The estimated spending for the project is around $18.5 billion, and there are indications that the facility may include in-house battery production. François-Philippe Champagne, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, expressed that Honda's contemplation is a "testament" to Canada's standing as an EV leader, citing the quality of the workforce and the strength of the industry. The Canadian government and the Province of Ontario have previously invested in EV manufacturing plants, including the Volkswagen plant in St. Thomas and a facility in Windsor with LG Energy Solution and Stellantis N.V. This potential investment from Honda reflects the ongoing efforts to position Canada's auto sector for the 21st-century economy.
