Honda contemplates $18.4-billion EV and battery plant investment in Canada

Honda is reportedly contemplating an $18.4-billion investment to establish an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing presence in Canada, according to a Nikkei newspaper report. The potential expansion includes plans for an EV manufacturing facility and battery production capabilities, with a decision expected by the end of 2024. While Honda Canada president Jean Marc Leclerc remained tight-lipped, mentioning the company's focus on the Ohio EV Hub, public documents reveal intriguing details. Last fall, Honda updated its lobbyist registry filing in Quebec, indicating a pursuit of funding or grants related to EV projects in the province. Furthermore, a May 2023 report submitted to the New Tecumseth City Council in Ontario, where Honda's existing Alliston facility is located, suggests the company may need increased water access from 2028 onwards, potentially aligning with the reported timeline for the new plant. If realized, this substantial investment could mark a pivotal moment in Honda's commitment to EVs and significantly impact the Canadian automotive and industrial landscape.
