Honda considering $18.4B electric vehicle and battery plant in Canada: media report

According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Honda Motor Co. Ltd. is considering investing approximately $18.4 billion in Canada to establish an electric vehicle (EV) plant. The proposed investment would encompass both a vehicle manufacturing facility and a battery plant, reflecting Honda's efforts to catch up in the rapidly growing EV market. Potential sites for the project include locations near Honda's existing plant in Alliston, Ontario, with a decision expected by the end of the year. While Honda has not officially commented on the report, Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne acknowledged the significance of the potential investment, citing Canada's growing reputation as a green supplier and a global leader in EV manufacturing.

The abundance of renewable energy in Canada and the federal government's mandate to transition all passenger vehicle sales to electric by 2035 are cited as factors influencing Honda's consideration of Canada as a location for its EV plant. While Honda has existing agreements for EV production and battery manufacturing in Ohio, the company may pursue independent ventures for these facilities in Canada. Canada has attracted significant EV investments, with companies like Volkswagen and Northvolt establishing battery plants in the country, supported by substantial government subsidies. Honda's potential investment underscores the growing momentum towards EV manufacturing in Canada and reflects the country's appeal as a strategic location for green technology development. While Honda is currently preparing to launch its first fully electric vehicle, the Prologue, in Canada, the proposed investment signals the company's commitment to expanding its EV offerings and strengthening its presence in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.
