U.K.-based startup Nyobolt has announced a breakthrough in battery technology that could potentially allow electric vehicles (EVs) to charge in under 10 minutes. The company claims to have unlocked the "holy grail" of battery tech, enabling EVs to charge fully and repeatedly in less than 6 minutes. They plan to begin production of this technology in 2024.
Faster charging would bring EVs closer to the convenience of gasoline cars, as it currently takes significantly longer to charge an EV compared to refueling with gasoline. This advancement could reduce range anxiety and potentially allow EVs to have smaller battery packs.
Nyobolt has collaborated with Callum, the design firm founded by automotive designer Ian Callum, to create an electric sports car. Designed by Julian Thomson, the car bears resemblance to the lightweight Lotus Elise, with added width and length. It features cameras instead of exterior mirrors and utilizes carbon-fiber bodywork, resulting in a weight closer to 2,200 pounds. The vehicle uses a relatively small 35-kWh battery pack, and a 6-minute charge supposedly provides 155 miles of range, translating to 1,600 miles of range added per hour of charging.
While Nyobolt has not disclosed production plans for the sports car, the company asserts that it is prepared for a rapid scale-up of its battery technology. The startup has conducted over 2,000 fast-charge cycles in testing without significant performance loss and is also promoting its battery tech for use in luxury cars, trucks, and buses.
