Sun Country Highway, a privately funded Canadian company, has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) charging network along Highway 401, one of the busiest roads in North America. Over 20 public charging stations, including 17 recent additions, now line the highway, allowing any currently available fully electric vehicle to travel the 900+ km (560 miles) route from Detroit, through Toronto, to Montreal entirely on electricity. The strategically placed stations, spaced every 50-98 km (31 to 60 miles), provide worry-free travel, albeit at Level 2/240V charging speeds.
While the stops may not be quick, all Sun Country stations offer free charging to the public. This expansion aligns with Canada's push for EV infrastructure development, and Sun Country's President, Kent Rathwell, emphasized the convenience and accessibility of the charging network. The initiative contributes to making long-distance electric travel more viable and supports the broader transition towards sustainable transportation in Canada.
