Government report showcases the growing gap in rural and urban EV charging infrastructure in Canada

The federal Zero Emissions Vehicle Infrastructure Program in Canada has been audited, revealing key findings and recommendations for improvement. The audit found that a significant majority of funded chargers were distributed to Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, while rural areas lag behind urban centers in charging infrastructure. Despite this, Natural Resources Canada is on track to meet the program's targets, with over 33,000 charging ports either completed or under construction as of July 2023. The audit report included recommendations for improvement, prompting the government to respond with plans for enhancements. These improvements aim to address reliability issues, serve underserved areas, collaborate more effectively with the Canada Infrastructure Bank, and accelerate funding rollout. The government has affirmed its commitment to closing charging infrastructure gaps and establishing targets focused on charger use types by 2024. Overall, the audit sheds light on both successes and areas for improvement in Canada's efforts to build a robust electric vehicle charging network nationwide.
