Free charge electric vehicle stations announced in Saskatoon as pilot project

Saskatoon has introduced free electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at Lakewood and Lawson Civic Centers to encourage the transition from gas-powered to electric vehicles. The city sees this initiative as a means to eliminate barriers for individuals considering the switch to EVs. The two locations serve as a pilot program to inform future plans for EV charging infrastructure, with insights intended to be shared with the local business community contemplating investments in such infrastructure. Amber Weckworth, the manager of climate, strategy, and data, highlighted that while EVs are not a singular solution to climate change, they do contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions and improved air quality. The move aligns with Saskatoon's Low Emissions Community Plan, which aims for 30% of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030, with a target of 90% by 2050. The introduction of free charging stations reflects the city's commitment to promoting EV adoption and supporting sustainable transportation options.
