Federal government unveils sales mandate rules to hit 100 per cent new ZEV sales by 2035

The federal government of Canada has introduced final regulations outlining the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, aimed at ensuring that all new light-duty vehicles sold in the country are zero-emission by 2035. Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault announced the standard at a press conference held at George Brown College in Toronto, emphasizing its significance in advancing the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and its role as a key tool in government policy. The Electric Vehicle Availability Standard operates through a credit system, mandating automakers to meet the 100% zero-emission vehicle sales target by the designated deadline. This mandate serves as a powerful mechanism to compel automakers to increase the availability and supply of zero-emission vehicles nationwide, with penalties for non-compliance.

Minister Guilbeault highlighted that the standard addresses a critical barrier to EV adoption: limited availability and long wait times for consumers. By ensuring a greater influx of electric cars into the Canadian market, the standard aims to mitigate disparities where vehicles are diverted to other markets, such as the U.S., thus ensuring Canadians have equitable access to zero-emission vehicles. This announcement marks a significant step forward in Canada's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning towards sustainable transportation solutions. By leveraging regulatory measures like the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, the government aims to accelerate the adoption of EVs and contribute to achieving broader climate goals. Overall, the introduction of the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard represents a proactive approach to fostering a greener automotive landscape in Canada, signaling a concerted effort to overcome barriers to EV adoption and drive the widespread transition to zero-emission vehicles.
