EXCLUSIVE: Hot ideas emerging from Western Canada’s growing battery research cluster

The Western Canada Battery Consortium and Innovation Hub, based at the University of Calgary, is focusing on advancing battery research and development in Alberta's frigid climate. Led by Professor Venkataraman Thangadurai, the initiative aims to establish itself as a global leader in cold weather battery chemistry. Despite the challenging winter conditions in Alberta, the hub is determined to make significant strides in the field.

The university campus, though typically inviting on sunny days, becomes desolate during extreme cold with horizontal sleet and anticipated heavy snowfall. Despite the harsh weather, the interdepartmental initiative housed in Science B is driving efforts to anchor and expand the battery industry in the region. With a specific focus on cold weather battery technologies, the consortium and innovation hub at the University of Calgary are positioning themselves to contribute valuable insights and solutions to the global battery industry, showcasing Alberta's potential as a key player in this critical field of research and development.
