Electric vehicle drivers ride out B.C.'s winter deep freeze, just not at 100 per cent

In cold climates like British Columbia, electric vehicle (EV) owners, such as Tesla Model S owner Bruce Stout in North Vancouver, acknowledge that sub-zero temperatures affect EV battery range. Stout compares this to the general loss of efficiency experienced by any automobile in colder conditions. He notes that while the impact is noticeable for EVs, gasoline-powered cars also consume more energy in the cold, but the driver may not be as aware due to the fuel gauge displaying levels like 'E' or three-quarters full. Despite the cold affecting EV performance, Stout suggests that the difference is not substantial for daily driving. This perspective reflects the adaptation of seasoned EV drivers who have learned to manage and accept the limitations imposed by freezing temperatures on electric vehicle range.
