Copper foil plant for use in electric vehicles to open in Quebec

Quebec's electric vehicle (EV) battery sector is set to welcome a new participant as South Korean firm Solus Advanced Materials, through its subsidiary Volta Energy Solutions, announces plans to open a copper foil factory in the province by 2026. This move is aimed at meeting the increasing demand in the North American market for car batteries. Volta Energy Solutions will repurpose a facility in Granby, Quebec, southeast of Montreal, to house the copper plant, adding a crucial component to Quebec's position in the global EV battery supply chain.

Volta Energy's upcoming plant, the first of its kind in Canada, is slated to produce an initial 25,000 tons of copper foil annually starting in 2026. The company has intentions to further enhance its capacity, reaching 63,000 tons with the opening of an expanded facility in 2027, sufficient for about 2.5 million electric vehicle batteries. Construction on this expansion is scheduled to commence next year, contributing to Quebec's efforts to strengthen its role in the electric vehicle industry and support the local production of key EV components.
