A recent investigation by CBC's Marketplace has highlighted significant challenges facing electric vehicle (EV) drivers in Canada, including pricing inconsistencies, unreliable charging networks, and performance issues. The investigation, aired in January as "Putting Electric Vehicles to the Test: Are We Ready for 2035?", scrutinized 12 charging stations across the country, revealing issues at seven of them, including Ivy, ChargePoint, and Petro-Canada locations. Problems ranged from difficulty initiating or ending charging sessions to payment processing issues via apps or credit card readers. Notably, FLO stations showcased reliability, attributed to continuous monitoring and maintenance. Martin Brière, Chief Network and Experience Officer at FLO, emphasized their commitment to ensuring over 98% uptime. However, challenges persist, prompting calls from experts like Joanna Kyriazis, Director of Public Affairs at Clean Energy Canada, for standardized and convenient pricing and payment systems. With the federal government aiming for all new vehicles to be fully electric by 2035, addressing these issues becomes crucial to fostering EV adoption in Canada.
