Canada is edging closer to a significant milestone, with electric vehicles (EVs) representing nearly one in every ten newly registered passenger vehicles. However, the federal government aims to double the share of EVs within just two years, necessitating a substantial increase in EV sales. Statistics Canada data for January to March 2023 reveal that over 30,000 new EVs were registered, constituting 8.6% of total new passenger vehicle registrations. Brian Kingston, President of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association, expresses concern over a slight decline from the previous quarter, citing factors such as the higher upfront cost of EVs and the limited availability of charging infrastructure as barriers to adoption. In contrast, Trevor Melanson from Clean Energy Canada anticipates significant growth in EV sales in the second quarter, fueled by a notable increase in federal rebates issued for EV purchases in April to June compared to the winter months. These contrasting perspectives highlight the complexities and challenges facing Canada's efforts to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.
