CANADA WANTS TO IMPOSE EV SALES QUOTAS ON AUTO DEALERS STARTING IN 2023

The Canadian federal government is set to implement electric-vehicle (EV) sales targets for dealerships nationwide from early 2023, aiming to accelerate the country's adoption of EVs. Environment Minister Stephen Guilbeault plans to use quotas, aligning with Canada's goal to reduce vehicle-related greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030, eliminate them by 2035, and achieve overall zero-emissions status by 2050. Currently, vehicles contribute to around 20% of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions. The federal quotas will apply to dealerships in all provinces, complementing existing measures in Quebec (since 2018) and British Columbia (since 2020). Canada aspires to have 50% of its vehicle sales comprised of zero-emissions vehicles by 2030. While the country has witnessed a surge in EV purchases over the last two years, constituting more than the previous eight years combined, only 3% of total vehicle sales are electric or plug-in hybrid models. The federal initiative seeks to align Canada with global leaders in EV adoption and contribute significantly to its emissions reduction targets.
