In a significant milestone for Canada's automotive industry, the country's first fully electric vehicle was produced in Ingersoll, Ontario, earlier this year. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford attended the unveiling ceremony, where GM's Brightdrop division introduced an electric delivery van and announced a substantial order from DHL. Securing GM's commitment to manufacture the van in Ingersoll and retain 400 jobs required a significant investment of over $500 million, split between the Ontario and federal governments. This investment is part of a larger effort, totaling at least $2 billion, to bolster electric vehicle manufacturing in Canada. Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne defends the taxpayer-funded investment, emphasizing the positive returns it brings. Ontario Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of preserving and creating jobs in the auto sector. Both levels of government provided substantial financial support to various automotive manufacturers, including Stellantis, Honda, and GM, to bolster assembly plants across Ontario.
