Canada, Ontario governments put nearly $1B toward EV battery parts plant

The federal and Ontario governments are jointly investing nearly $1 billion in the construction of an electric vehicle (EV) battery component plant in eastern Ontario. The $2.761-billion Umicore facility, located in Loyalist Township, will specialize in producing cathode active materials and precursor cathode active materials crucial for electric vehicle batteries. The initiative aims to support the growing EV market, contributing to the development of sustainable transportation solutions.

On Monday, government ministers revealed that Ottawa is committing $551.3 million to the project, while the Ontario government is allocating up to $424.6 million for capital costs. This significant investment underscores the commitment to advancing the EV sector, addressing environmental concerns, and fostering economic growth in the region. The Umicore facility is poised to play a pivotal role in bolstering the local economy, creating jobs, and positioning Ontario as a key player in the green technology and electric vehicle manufacturing landscape. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to transition towards cleaner energy sources and reduce the carbon footprint associated with traditional transportation methods.
