Canadian officials are reportedly in talks with representatives from Honda Motor regarding the potential construction of a nearly 2 trillion yen (US$13.9 billion) electric vehicle (EV) plant in Canada. While Honda has not officially commented on the meetings, a spokesperson stated that there was nothing to disclose at the moment. According to a report from Japan's Nikkei news group, Honda is exploring various sites for the EV plant, with a decision expected by the end of 2024 and operations possibly commencing in 2028. Canadian federal government representatives are engaging with Honda, emphasizing the strong relationship between Canada and the automaker. Canada has been actively courting companies involved in the EV supply chain to secure its manufacturing sector's future, offering substantial support to projects like Volkswagen and Stellantis-LG Energy Solution's battery gigafactories. Honda, Japan's second-largest carmaker, has been relatively slow in adopting electric vehicles but, in collaboration with LG Energy Solution, announced a US$4.4 billion joint venture battery plant in Ohio in 2022. The outcome of the discussions with Canadian officials could significantly impact Honda's future EV manufacturing strategy.
