Canada faces declining EV interest, report shows, despite push to boost sales

As Canada aims for net-zero carbon emissions and mandates 20% of car sales to be electric vehicles (EVs) by 2026, a report by AutoTrader.ca suggests a declining interest in EVs, questioning the achievability of the goal. The 2023 top search data reveals a drop in intent to purchase an EV, from 68% in 2022 to 56% in 2023 among car shoppers who don't own an EV. Higher gas prices in 2022 had driven more interest in EVs, but with prices dropping, interest waned. Concerns about vehicle prices, interest rates, and inflation were cited by 40% of those not planning to switch to EVs. Currently, only one in 10 Canadians own an EV, and EV searches constitute less than 3% on AutoTrader's platform. While Canada's EV uptake is increasing, challenges persist, casting doubt on the country's plan to prioritize EV sales. Greig Mordue from McMaster University notes ongoing issues despite the rising interest in EVs.
