Canada announces new EV availability standard

The Canadian government has finalized the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard to ensure a continuous supply of zero-emission vehicles (EVs) and meet the national goal of 100% EV sales by 2035. With interim targets set at 20% by 2026 and 60% by 2030, the standard aims to reduce wait times for EVs, aligning with international efforts to expand EV use. Provinces like British Columbia and Quebec, with existing standards, have witnessed EVs making up one in five sales. The Canadian government commits $1.2 billion to establish 84,500 chargers by 2029, supporting the EV transition. The standard, following two years of engagement, adopts a phased-in approach for a smooth transition and complements investments in EV production and battery supply chains, expected to create thousands of jobs. Government officials highlight the health and job creation benefits associated with transitioning to EVs, acknowledging their role in securing a low-carbon future.
