Canada announces end to gas-powered vehicle sales while demand for EVs dips

The Canadian federal government has unveiled the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, aiming for 100% of new vehicle sales to be electric or hybrid by 2035. Environment Minister Stephen Guilbeault set an initial target of 20% electric or long-range hybrid sales by 2026, accompanied by incentives to encourage automakers to boost electric vehicle (EV) production. The minister noted an early credit system to hasten EV market presence and expand charging infrastructure. Despite an 850% year-over-year increase in EV inventory, a shift towards EVs faces challenges as a top search and best-selling car in 2023 was the Ford F150, revealing lingering preference for traditional vehicles. High EV prices compared to gas-powered counterparts, even with a $5,000 federal incentive, contribute to softening interest. Guilbeault expects the price gap to diminish by the decade's end. While provinces like BC and Quebec offer incentives, remote areas may see slower EV adoption. However, Guilbeault remains optimistic about evolving EV technology until 2035. Detailed plans will be published later this week.
