Calls for electric-vehicle rebates in Manitoba as feds say new cars, trucks must be emission-free by 2035

Members of Manitoba's automotive industry are urging the provincial government to introduce incentives to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) following the federal government's announcement that all new passenger vehicles must be emissions-free by 2035. Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault outlined a plan where automakers would be incentivized to reduce gasoline or diesel-powered vehicle production, earning credits for increasing electric vehicle sales. The proposal mandates a minimum of 20% electric vehicles by 2026, reaching 100% by 2035. While Quebec and British Columbia have already surpassed the 20% threshold, Guilbeault encourages all provinces to align with the EV plan.

Despite the federal push towards electrification, the head of a major Winnipeg car dealership highlights existing barriers that deter potential EV buyers. The call for provincial incentives reflects industry stakeholders' recognition of the need to address challenges such as range anxiety, charging infrastructure, and upfront costs, in order to facilitate a smoother transition to electric mobility in Manitoba.
