Buying an electric car? What to know about costs, logistics of at-home charging

As electric vehicles (EVs) gain popularity in Canada, accounting for three percent of light vehicle sales in 2022, there is a growing need for at-home charging infrastructure. The federal government's plan to phase out the sale of gas-powered cars by 2035 is expected to further boost EV adoption. However, experts point out that potential buyers often overlook the cost and logistical challenges associated with setting up home charging stations.

According to Daniel Breton, head of the industry association Electric Mobility Canada, limited knowledge and understanding of electric vehicle chargers are significant barriers. A survey conducted by Electric Mobility Canada revealed that while 88 percent of respondents expressed interest in their next vehicle being electric, only 13 percent claimed to have an in-depth understanding of EVs, including aspects like public charging stations, government rebates, and battery life. The findings underscore the importance of increasing awareness and education about EV charging infrastructure to facilitate a smoother transition to electric vehicles in Canada. Addressing these challenges can contribute to a more informed consumer base and promote the adoption of sustainable transportation options.
