NFI Group Inc., a Winnipeg-based independent manufacturer of buses and motor coaches, has entered a new long-term supply agreement with Ballard Power Systems, headquartered in Burnaby, B.C., Canada. The agreement entails Ballard supplying at least 100 fuel cell modules, specifically its FCmove-HD+ modules, to NFI's subsidiary, New Flyer Industries. New Flyer, known for its Xcelsior CHARGE FC hydrogen fuel cell buses, will utilize these modules for its vehicles. The deal underscores NFI's commitment to various propulsion systems, including hybrid electric, trolley electric, battery electric, and fuel cell electric, for its transportation solutions. NFI's diverse portfolio includes prominent bus brands such as Canada's New Flyer Industries, the UK's Alexander Dennis, and U.S.-based Motor Coach Industries.
David Mucciacciaro, Ballard's chief commercial officer, expressed pride in NFI's selection of Ballard as their strategic partner for advancing in the fuel cell bus market. This partnership marks a significant step for both companies in furthering the adoption of fuel cell technology in public transportation. The modules provided by Ballard will power New Flyer's buses, contributing to sustainable mobility solutions and reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
The agreement highlights the growing demand for fuel cell technology in the transportation industry and signifies a concerted effort by NFI and Ballard to address environmental concerns while meeting the evolving needs of the market. With deliveries slated for 2024, this deal sets the stage for continued collaboration between NFI and Ballard in promoting clean energy solutions for public transportation globally.
