B.C. moves up electric vehicle target, with 100-per-cent sales goal by 2035

British Columbia (B.C.) has announced plans to accelerate its transition to electric vehicles (EVs) by requiring all new light-duty vehicles sold in the province, including passenger cars and trucks, to be emission-free by 2035, five years earlier than the initial target of 2040. This move aims to combat climate change and promote cleaner transportation. Under the accelerated timeline, automakers will be mandated to meet escalating annual percentages for light-duty zero-emission vehicle sales and leases. Targets include 26% by 2026, 90% by 2030, and 100% by 2035. Energy Minister Josie Osborne emphasized that B.C. is the first jurisdiction globally to enshrine such an EV sales target into law, aiming to make it easier for consumers to choose electric vehicles for their next purchase.

However, the New Car Dealers Association of B.C. expressed concerns about the potential unintended consequences of the new regulations. They noted that automakers may face significant penalties for every non-zero-emission vehicle sold beyond allowable limits, potentially driving up vehicle prices. The association also highlighted challenges such as supply issues, inadequate charging infrastructure in regions like B.C.'s Interior and the north, and the relative affordability of zero-emission vehicles even with incentives. To support the transition, B.C. announced the "recharging" of its Go Electric EV Charger Rebate Program with $7 million in new funding. The program offers rebates for installing EV charging infrastructure in homes, workplaces, and multi-unit residential buildings. Applications for rebates for single-family homes and workplaces reopened concurrently with the announcement. B.C. emphasized its success in exceeding sales targets for zero-emission vehicles since the implementation of the Zero-Emission Vehicles Act in 2019. The province currently leads Canada in electric vehicle sales, comprising nearly 21% of all light-duty passenger vehicles sold. These initiatives reflect B.C.'s commitment to fostering a cleaner, greener future through increased EV adoption and infrastructure development.
