Alberta is discouraging EV charging in its grid alerts: experts wonder why

Confusion arose in Alberta as the Alberta Energy System Operator (AESO) issued four rolling grid alerts, urging residents to conserve energy, including refraining from charging electric vehicles, during extreme cold spells earlier this month. The alerts were prompted by record-low temperatures, with the average reaching -31°C and hitting a staggering -46.1°C in some areas. AESO recorded a new peak electricity demand record of 12,384 megawatts, prompting the alerts over four consecutive days. However, shortly after each alert was issued, demand dropped, leading to the alerts being lifted, only for the cycle to repeat later. The situation highlighted the challenges of managing energy demand during extreme weather conditions and the need for clearer communication regarding energy conservation measures.
