Access to electric vehicle charging getting better but not quickly enough

The availability of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Canada varies significantly, with Montreal and Vancouver boasting relatively robust charging infrastructure compared to other regions. While Quebec and British Columbia have made significant progress in installing charging stations, other parts of the country face challenges in finding adequate charging facilities. As of August 15, there are nearly 23,000 charging ports in over 9,100 public locations nationwide, with Montreal alone hosting almost 12% of them and Vancouver accounting for another 10%. Canada aims to have 20% of new car sales be electric by 2026, increasing to 60% by 2030 and reaching 100% by 2035. To meet these targets, projections indicate a need for approximately 52,000 public charging ports by 2025 and up to 499,000 by 2035, particularly focusing on Level 2 chargers for residential charging convenience and DC fast chargers along highways for long-distance travel. Currently, about 80% of Canada's charging ports are Level 2, with approximately 400 new ports added monthly since December 2021, including a mix of Level 2 and DC fast chargers. This highlights the ongoing efforts to expand and diversify EV charging infrastructure nationwide, addressing disparities in accessibility and supporting Canada's transition towards electric transportation.
